Asbestos exposure has been linked to several serious cancers affecting the respiratory system. Asbestos lung cancer refers to malignant tumors that develop in the lung tissue after asbestos fibers are inhaled and become embedded in the lungs. Although often discussed alongside mesothelioma, asbestos exposure is also a well-established risk factor for traditional lung carcinoma.

Asbestos-related lung cancer typically develops decades after exposure, making it difficult for patients to immediately connect their diagnosis to asbestos. This long latency period can complicate both diagnosis and treatment.

What Is Asbestos Lung Cancer?

Asbestos lung cancer involves malignant tumors that form within the lung tissue itself. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can travel deep into the lungs and become lodged in the alveoli and surrounding tissues. Over time, these fibers cause persistent irritation, scarring, and cellular damage that may lead to cancerous changes.

Unlike mesothelioma, which affects the pleural lining around the lungs, asbestos-related lung cancer originates in the lung's epithelial cells. It is typically classified as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or small cell lung cancer (SCLC), both of which can spread to lymph nodes or distant organs if left untreated.
