ARTRA 524(g) Asbestos Trust
Established in 2007 with initial funding of $74 million, the ARTRA 524(g) Asbestos Trust was created as part of the ARTRA Group's Chapter 11 Joint Plan of Reorganization. The Trust is responsible for processing and compensating valid personal injury claims resulting from exposure to asbestos-containing products manufactured by the company.
The History
ARTRA's asbestos-related issues began in 1975 when it purchased Synkoloid, a company that had already been manufacturing asbestos-containing products for many years. At the time, ARTRA did not realize the long-term implications of this acquisition.
In 1981, ARTRA sold Synkoloid to the Muralo Company, but Muralo refused to assume responsibility for asbestos-related claims from before the sale. By the early 2000s, ARTRA faced more than 46,000 lawsuits filed by individuals claiming harm from Synkoloid's asbestos-containing products.
To address these liabilities, ARTRA filed for bankruptcy and created the ARTRA 524(g) Asbestos Trust. Muralo contributed $2.5 million, with the remainder coming from insurance sources. The purpose of the Trust was to ensure a fair and organized process for compensating individuals affected by ARTRA's asbestos products.
