Congoleum Plan Trust

In 2010, the Congoleum Plan Trust was formed after the confirmation of the Chapter 11 Joint Plan of Reorganization by the Congoleum Corporation. The trust was initially funded with $270 million to compensate victims of asbestos-containing flooring products. The company had filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

History of the Trust

Congoleum was a Scottish company that expanded operations in the United States in the late 19th century. The company specialized in flooring materials that contained asbestos, which were used in schools, homes, and various buildings. As a result, production workers and building occupants were exposed to asbestos.

Although Congoleum stopped producing asbestos-containing products by 1984, lawsuits related to asbestos exposure grew throughout the 1980s. These legal challenges ultimately led the company to file for bankruptcy, and the Congoleum Plan Trust was established in 2010.
